LD Study Skills

Finally! perhaps the most valuable topic ever: actual practical idea for students having learning problems, or problems with their school work — problems we hate to call “learning disabilities.” I cam back from a conference and just had to add in my takeaways from one of the sessions I attended.

it was the Repairing the Ruins Conference from ACCS – Association of Classical Christian Schools. The breakout presenter was Susan Maher from Regents, Austin. All of the credit to her and any blame of mistakes to me.

LD THE BEST DO IT

I wanted to emphasize that the best schools, if they can afford it, do deal with “l;earning disabilities.”  Only brighter than average students will get this designation. So, once again, do not let stigma stop you from getting help. Labeling is an issue, and I will take that up very soon, but the idea of a school or educator or parent failing to get help for these kind of learning problems is itself part of the labeling issue.  This episode, mere points out my surprise that Regents, the very most elite and exclusive, offers this help.

MODIFICATION IS ABOUT LOWERING ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Wanted to correct or add to my words about remediation rather than accommodation. At Regents they say “accommodation not modification.”  We actually agree in practice, but I wanted to convey the vocabulary and the ideas to you.

3 GREAT IDEAS FOR STRENGTHENING ABILITY TO DO SCHOOL WORK: READING, NOTE-TAKING, WRITING PAPERS

Lastly, I wanted to relay 3 good ideas for expanding study skills in a way that many students with learning problems will be able to apply helpfully to their school work. Using memnonic devices of SQ3R, LISAN, and SLOWER, these students can be helped to better read textbooks, note-take, and write papers.

Please hear the episode and then feel free to add any similar study skills techniques you may know about.

Pattern of Lies

How to not be Fooled by the Lies

We see how to not be deceived by the pattern of lies, liars, and lying spirits. We can look around us and see that we , our friends, and a good deal of our nation has been deceived, and badly so.  We have a story in the Bible about a liar sent to be used in warfare.   His name was Rabshakeh, and he was a captain, sent my a brutal marauding emperor Senacharib, to talk to the men of Judah, get them snookered, discouraged, and confused. Thus, he hoped to make his battle against the easier. Actually, he was pretty good at it. Rabshakeh used a pattern of accusations, lies, and false deals.  it might have worked had the Judahites not believed in God; had they not known something about that God was different; had there not been a prophet on the seen and a good king.   Isaiah 37( & II Chronicles 36 and 2Kings 18 & 19)

Lies, Accusations, Projections, Intimidation, Misleading Deals

We are going to look at prophet Isaiah’s memory of the incident. he doesn’t sanitize the picture that Rabshakeh paints as much as Ii Chronicles.  Fear is a weapon. Confusion is a weapon. But hope for normalcy can also be a weapon. Notice that he gives misleading deals, painted with comforting words. The kingdom needed to take a step back and carefully consider. They needed to compare what they were hearing with what they knew. They needed to consult God.

is This Really an Attack on the Church?

In the final analysis, the attack was on God and God’s character. Rabshakeh was only a captain, doing what his emperor was telling him.  That emperor worshiped an idol that today we think really was a front for a demon.  Anyway, God was personally confronted. Not just the religion; not just the kingdom, not just all the people, but the thing went to the depth. Rabshakeh used God’s person name and said over and over that that God could not stand up to the Assyrians.

And so, God took it personally. We see in the end of the story, how God reserved the lat move for Himself. Judah won without fighting this time. Most of the time, they did have to show up. This time, they had to just not be deceived by the lying.

So, today, we focus on the pattern of lying.

If this is not very clear to you, would you like a retrospective, along with a course in reasoning? Seriously, I am so amazed in a bad way at how people have been so fooled. Can people really be that stupid? Are that many people really paid off? What is going on?

Please please do share this episode with your pastor!

Here are some pastors who say 1) enough is enough and 2) pastors, you had better get on board. https://flashpoint.govictory.com/episode/flashpoint-enough-is-enough-pray-eric-metaxas-dutch-sheets-mario-murillo/   Please listen to the end, where they pray for pastors. You will see it is straightforward, but upbeat.

The Secrets to Overcoming ADD & ADHD

Dr. Linda Classen, resident expert on ADD/ADHD tells us how to handle and overcoming attention problems — what are often called ADD and ADHD. She tells about the prevalence physical problems in the brain, how to deal with presenting problems as a parent or educator, and even her personal challenges. Widely respected and giving easy to understand information that is not as widely known as it should be.

What do you look for?
What can a teacher do?
How can we handle this as a challenge of education?
What do we do in terms of behavior modification?
When are drugs really what we should be considering?
How can we talk to professionals about this problem?
Is this a death knell?

Secrets to overcoming.

RESOURCES

Dr. Classen has retired, so we do not have a link to her practice.

to find Tom Schnorr, compounding pharmacist, go to Austin Compounding Pharmacy

Here is a link to info about diagnoses of ADD/ADH today. It has been an open secret that “no single test” means that doctors take up (or should take up) a variety of reports and make a determination. In many cases, busy doctors just respond to pressure by parents to provide meds. This is unethical, but appears to be reasonable and effective. Notice: just a little caffeine would improve your grades too. The problem is that meds for ADD/ADHD are controlled substances — for a reason. Many children / youth have complications including insufficient nutrition. Sometimes these med have been sold these meds on the “black market.” Today, other drugs are in the headlines, but these are still worthy of proper attention. Some youth, particularly young men, have discovered that plenty of working out and plenty of coffee have obviated the need for meds like “speed.”

MY ADVICE

I advocate going up the protocol, starting with removing possible harmful substances like red dye, other similar agents known to cause ADD/ADHD like symptoms and any allergens.
Then, be sure that the student has great nutrition, plenty of exercise, and a calm environment in which to study. Often looking out into a green garden works better than a study carell.
Talk with wellness professionals.
Use meds only as a last resort. Do not make them the rush-to-go-to. It was this very tendency that made the legislature outlaw teachers urging the parents to get medications for children. While it has been prohibited for some time, I still hear of instances. Better to fix the problem than to medicate it. Worst is to not understand the problem and torture or be tortured by it.

Finally, by way of encouragement, let me tell you that I know some highly successful adults who credit some of their success to ADD/ADHD. Maybe. Maybe they can handle fast pace. Or maybe it is just a ploy to get aware with rushing away. Anyway — they say they are ADD/ADHD — and they do have high level positions. Be encouraged.

Sensory Integration with Nikki Branch, OT

We are hearing a lot about sensory integration problems and the discipline that is handling sensory integration problems most is Occupational Therapy. It may seem strange to have children going to occupational therapy, but Nikki will explain to us that this is about the normal tasks that occupy a persons time. LOL Anyway, here is a brief introduction, from 2010, to OT for sensory integration.

We loved Nikki, who was a graduate of Baylor and a member of what was then the fastest growing church in Austin. She worked for Milestones, but has moved away since then. However, some of what she said, related to 2010 is exactly what needs to be considered today in 2021, that we can not speak about. you will hear it, carefully said, and you will know.

WHAT I DO

From my doctor mom and preschool educator perspective lots of sensory experiences, at the child’s level is a great idea. Dr. Montessori based much of her work on sensory education. Children’s task in the first years is to explore their environment, but modern environments are often too restrictive. For instance, a child can investigate a crib or a playpen only so much. They want to feel the carpet and the grass. They wan to bang the pots and the cabinet doors. They want to feel the difference between the velvet cushion and the satin one. The Montessori classroom offers these experiences in an organized manner. Also, as a grandmother of children who had problems, I offered a lot of swinging, rocking, and dancing to one child. Another needed extra time to draw circles and boxes and learn how to use a pencil. As an educator, I have seen children with differing problems. Some great OTs really helped families who were mystified about their children’s troubles.

Please chime in and tell us what is going on for you parents and your professionals now. We love to hear from you.
