Homeschooling Foundations

Once someone decides to home educate, then they nearly always want to know about curricula and how to teach reaching. Those are important questions, and I do answer them. But those are not the right questions, nor the first questions. First consider what your child needs to learn, and how they need to learn it. You can think through all that in my book, *Learn at Home For Great Shalom.”  (Also available in eformat, but I recommend getting the paperback.) Then you can choose your curricula.

For teaching reading and math, go to the store and choose the series on that topic: “How to Teach…”  Super sale; lowest price ever

The first task of home education is…. socialization! Or better said: conveying character. Or better said: discipling for success. Wow! so many linguistic landmines! Definitions have destinations!

Think through these things with me. HIstory, literature, and everything conveys a training in character, and that is more foundational even that reading. It helps the child learn to learn. It keeps the child from having to be controlled. It makes a strong family and a strong nation when people can be self-governing. That starts with virtue or character… in short, self-governance.

Good News is the Fight Against Porn in School

Probably by now you know that there is some controversy because schools — as  a policy — are teaching children what they call “inclusive sex education” at ages there no sex education would be appropriate and what would otherwise be legally defined as pornography. Not surprisingly, those enforcing this are attempting to keep it secret from parents. And then accusing parents who object as being domestic terrorists. And not surprisingly, anyone not directly involved does not about it and when told can not believe it.  Same thing in public libraries.

Dani Johnson, because she was plugged into the marketing industry warned us about this push in the marketplace back in 2009. No one expected this to be in schools. But we know for sure it is now. We have had some disappointing losses in elections such as for school board. I am happy to pass along some good news. One example that I know of is from Tennessee. I tell you about the case briefly, but here is the full interview:

While we would not expect Christian schools to teach porn, as such, we are hearing that accrediting agencies are requiring a pro-homosexual stance.

The bad news is that a few, very dedicated people, with no shame and some strategy can make a whole nation turn. The better news is that with the help of God, 12 fully dedicated people can turn the whole wicked world right side up again.

The Importance of History — Or What to Say to People With Bad Ideas

This episode is our Independence Day episode: the Importance of History — both teaching and knowing it. The ideas here were sparked by the new book by David Rubin: Confronting Radicals: What American Can Learn from Israel. So, I give a little book review. Then, I give many examples from real history that confront typical bad ideas that people often attempt to hoodwink us with. Fairly entertaining, I think. A good story often goes across better than an argument. Hope you enjoy.

You may get the book here:

BTW, at the party I was fortunate enough to be invited to, there was a reading, in full, of the Declaration of Independence. I thought that was very appropriate. I hope to adopt that custom. You might want to as well.

Notice that David Barton has the famous picture that I mentioned on his masthead.

There are books for children and adults as well as video courses here : https://www.patriotacademy.com/

You may even find a live Biblical Citizenship course in your area. I recommend it.

Please go to our store and get my Modern American Primer. It is not a book to teach reading. It is more of a consideration of freedom and how to pass it down to our children.

BTW, it is teaching Writing (handwriting) and only THEN reading. Bet you didn’t know that. Know why? Because your model is public schooling.

You know public schooling is doing a bad job now. Did you know that it has been doing an increasingly bad job for 100 years?  Yes. The good part about that is that we have other methods that have shown for 100 years that it can be done better. I will let you in on the secret on that teaches handwriting, reading, and composition the most easily. It is like games. For 4 year olds! They love it.

Do you want to teach your kids that learning is not fun? That they can’t do it? if so, use worksheets. if not… listen to this episode.
