Universal Business Education

As the last in our series about the sound of Pentecost, and preparatory to our series on what to teach your children about money, we consider the suggestion for universal business education — something that American public education seems to have always been allergic to. Strange for the most capitalistic society? First, can we still claim that? Likely not. However, public school was originally designed to make train factory workers out of immigrants. More recently, it was designed to make useful idiots. (Documentation later, if you like.) For now, let’s think what it might be like to teach children about business principles.

The Great Rescue

Did you notice that God made a great rescue for us this Passover season? Please notice this and consider it during the time between Passover and Pentecost. It is one thing to be rescued. Another thing to take and keep the land. Don’t let your rescue go to waste.

BE The Village

Once we understand the problems, have analyzed the difficulty of the current policy, what will we do? We might sally forth and try to change public policy, but experience says that such efforts normally go into the black hole of frustration. There is something, however, that can be done directly. You, yourself can probably help children.

If public policy for public education of young children has been worse and worse, there is some robust, replicated, scientific research that shows that church affiliated schools and preschool outperform. So instead of tearing your hair out trying to expand public education, why not help a congregation open a preschool? We have many buildings empty all week. We have a few good women, often college educated, who might work part-time. Churches have the expertise — and the history. If you can not do this, you have find someone who can. There are obstacles, of course, but I can help you over them.

First, take a listen. Then share. How much more sensible, practical, than sallying forth with self-righteous finger pointing: “It Takes a Village.” Well, if so, then WE need to be that village. The government is not a village. Not even a city. We can be, though. Please next, go to www.teachachildchangeanation.org for more information how your congregation could start a licensed child care center as a mission.

The Blessing Economy

How to teach your children about success from a place of a Biblical understanding of the Blessing Economy.

It occurs to me that public school is an economy of cursing. Cursing is permitted, cursing children by labeling them is required, and the system drags down even the most well-meaning teacher into discarding children who require extra attention. This is not God’s economy. God’s economy is one of blessing. We start from God’s loving each one of us. We go forward knowing his rules are for our benefit. We proceed thru a life’s calling that is service and contribution and thus glory. Our end is resting in his glory/goodness/blessing. Think about it.
